Solar cooking has some benefits for the Urban Homesteader. Using a solar cooker can save money, be used without electricity in an emergency situation, and be portable to use anywhere you choose. A solar cooker can be purchased or made at home from components that are free, inexpensive, moderately expensive or some combination of these.
Solar cooking is one step you can take towards being self sufficient, and it will be a fun addition to your current lifestyle. You can take a solar cooker camping as well as use it at home.
You can use a solar cooker much the same way as you might use a crock pot in that you can use it for slow cooking by controlling the amount and intensity of the sun. A solar powered oven is quite versatile as you can do anything from bake in them to boiling water.
A great way to get started with solar cooking is to make you own solar powered oven cheaply out of cardboard. It will give you hands on experience and help you know what your needs and limitations are before spending money to either make yourself a nice one out of more expensive materials, or to make the decision to purchase one.
